Clarification — 2026-08-12
Loveland, CO · incident June 29, 2019
The June 2026 update originally said the litigation established, across the Tenth Circuit, that police may not shoot a dog absent imminent danger. That overstated it: a settlement admits no liability and sets no rule, and the appellate ruling held only that this officer was not entitled to qualified immunity at that stage. The passage has been rewritten, and a duplicated retelling of the 2019 shooting has been removed from the update.

An earlier version of this entry named the deputy who fired. Our only source for that name was secondary reporting, which does not meet the sourcing standard set out in our methodology.
