Video Showed His Gun Drawn Before the Dogs Appeared. He Killed Both; the Family Was Cited.

The 911 call was for help. That is what brought a San Antonio police officer to the Sekula family's home on the city's Northwest Side on October 27, 2024.

The officer knocked at the door. Then he moved — onto the property, toward the back yard.

The Sekulas had two dogs back there. One was a registered service animal. Their names were never reported; the record preserves them only as the couple's two dogs.

The family's home video captured the encounter, and its most damning detail comes before any dog is visible at all: the officer's gun was already drawn before the dogs appeared. When they did appear, he fired multiple shots. Both dogs died. The owners ran out of their house screaming as it happened.

Take stock of that scene. A call for help. An officer walking toward a family's back yard with his weapon already out. Two dogs dead — one of them a registered service animal — and their owners screaming in their own yard. Then ask what the San Antonio Police Department did about it.

Internal Affairs opened an investigation. That is the first fact. Here is the second: the officer was not placed on leave. While the investigation into his killing of two dogs proceeded, he faced not even the mildest, most routine administrative measure available to a police department. No findings from that investigation have been reported, and the officer has not been publicly named.

And here is the third, the one that completes the picture. The Sekula family was cited — for having their dogs unrestrained. The dogs were on the family's own property, in the path of an officer whom video showed approaching with his gun already drawn. They are dead. Their owners received the citation.

Count the official consequences as the record stands. For the officer: an open internal investigation with no reported findings, no leave, no discipline, and no name released to the public. For the family: two dead dogs, one of them a registered service animal, and a code violation. The only enforcement action to come out of October 27, 2024, so far as the public record shows, was aimed at the people whose dogs were killed.
