Xander was a three-year-old foxhound-beagle mix who lived with the Coleman family near Pensacola, Florida. On November 19, 2021, Escambia County sheriff's deputies were pursuing a suspect with a felony warrant near the family's home. The Colemans were not the target of anything. They were simply in the neighborhood where the search happened to go.
As deputies moved through the area, Xander ran toward the roadway.
The family says they yelled to the deputies that he was friendly. A deputy shot the dog in the head from about three feet away.
The sheriff's office said Xander charged aggressively. The family's account and the department's account cannot both be true, and no public process ever resolved which one was.
Xander did not die immediately. He was euthanized because of the wound.
